If you are writing articles as a part of your business marketing and especially your internet marketing strategy, you will want to read this article. You will find out if and how well the thousand year old advice on solid, persuasive writing apply to your business. You will be able to use the advice right away to improve your writing of descriptions of your products or services that you are marketing. You might be surprised that the advice that worked so well for Aristotle, helping him become one of the most revered Greek philosophers, holds true in the twenty-first century internet business as well.
As a writer you know how important it is to produce high quality articles. But what does it mean to write a quality article? Specifically, what are the potential buyers looking to get from your writing? Well they are reading about your products or services. So how do you write about these to satisfy the readers needs and ultimately produce more sales and more business for you?
I have selected four tips on persuasive speaking and writing from the book "The Rhetoric of Aristotle". The tips are: Word Your Descriptions Carefully, Make Sensory Descriptions, Bring Your Objects to Life, and Use Figures of Speech.
Word Your Descriptions Carefully.
When reading prose or even poetry you sometimes feel that your descriptions should involve adding the feel good, rosy adjectives, or embellishments. Aristotle disagrees. He claims a well written, concise description is the most effective path. Precision in the description of the image is important. Aristotle goes one step further and suggests using musical qualities of the language in the accurate description. He suggests reinforcing the content by choosing words that when spoken, musically match the object described.
Make Sensory Descriptions.
Aristotle suggests to get the reader to "See things." What he means is that in general, our writing must paint a solid visual image and further must bring auditory references, as well as the senses of touch and smell into the picture if appropriate. The sensory description can even include our response to the object described, such as the senses and the feelings that we feel inside, such as a faster heart beat, or a knot in the stomach, or an ear-to-ear smile on our face. You can further enhance the sensory descriptions by bringing them to life, as follows.
Bring Your Objects to Life.
Even when describing inanimate objects such as electronics products, you can enhance the impression of the reader by writing of things in a state of activity. For inanimate objects, such as electronics, you could use a description of a special light shining on it which could give an impression of impermanence, or aliveness to the object. In other words, use word pictures, and see to make these pictures into moving pictures.
Use Figures of Speech.
A good description according to Aristotle, includes a metaphor, or a figure of speech. Why? Just by the mere fact you are communicating the information, you can safely assume the reader does not know much about the object that is being described. So a good metaphor could show a degree of similarity of a new object to an object that is better known to the reader. This can increase the acceptance and understanding a good deal.
These are four suggestions by Aristotle to help you write better product and service descriptions on your business websites and marketing articles. Now that you know them, go out and start writing carefully worded, sensory and lively descriptions. Bring them closer to your reader by using figures of speech and comparing your new shiny products with something the reader may be more familiar with. By doing so you may find it easier to write your materials and might be able to grow your business faster.
