At one time the word massage, as in massage parlor, had connotations that made it inappropriate in polite society. It gave the impression as something out of Paris in the thirties. In reality the word massage means "the act or art of treating the body by rubbing, kneading, patting, or the like, to stimulate circulation, increase suppleness, relieve tension, etc.".
It can also refer to treating or caring for.
The application of massage goes back many hundreds of years to ancient Greece or ancient Egypt. It was practiced before or after competitions as well as a treatment for the infirm. The rubbing down over the body, specially the muscles but also the ligaments and joints has been going on in just about all civilizations. Athletes did it as part of the companionship and bonding in ancient Greece - it was in fact an important part of their preparations during those Olympic games, the dubbing down with oil.
The Aztecs did it, the Greeks and Romans, the Etruscans, the Masai warriors. Most cultures that respected and took care of the human body, warrior civilizations for example, had some sort of massage procedure.
The reason for it, as indicated in the description above, was to stimulate, increase suppleness and relieve tension.
Massagers, both men and women, supplied the massage and spent many years, as they do now, building up their expertise.
There are also different styles and schools of massage that have developed over the years and in different countries. There are around 80 different styles of massage. They can be used to relieve pain, to relax tense muscles and stress related aches. They can be given with mechanical aids or with parts of the body like hands, elbows and feet. Heat treatment can also be applied: both warm or cold.
You can give yourself a massage (a mechanical or electrical massager would be the best option), or someone else can give you a massage. The idea could be to help you relax or it could be with a sensual intent. Oils and lotions can also be applied.
For some people imagination is the only limitation.
In today's environment where stress seems to be a normal part of most lives, specially those that revolve round cities, a massage at the right time, can be a relaxing and soothing part of your day.
Think of people who...
1. Work all day, struggle with traffic and rush home. They feel tired and their body demands a break. Many times the stress and pressures of day to day survival result in head aches, back pain and stomach complaints. They hurry over their meals which are usually unhealthy. They sit a lot in front of a computer and usually in a position that hours later results in a back ache. They finally go to bed after slouching in an arm chair to tired to do anything but hit the remote. And then, repeat the same thing all over again.
Or...
2. Take another scenario which has great similarities in the daily grind. But then when you get home you give yourself, or your partner gives you, a soothing back massage or perhaps a foot massage. The soft muscle rubbing or the vibration you receive relaxes you and relieves you from the physical aspects of your stress. Then you enjoy your evening with your thoughts away from work related pressures and you can focus on the good thing in life.
A soothing massage will not eliminate the cause for stress, nor will it resolve all your problems.
But it is a fine way to end the day!
