Choosing a Peel:

Glycolic: stimulates collagen growth more effectively than any of the other peels. It's small molecule allows it to slip beneath the epidermis to reach the collagen fibers below and results in 15%-25% thickening over 12 weeks. Glycolic acid generally causes little or no visible peeling.

Lactic: works on the surface of the skin to treat tone, texture, and pigmentation. The Lactic acid molecule works to pull moisture into the cells, and exfoliate surface cells which helps to perfect the skin's surface and restore the skin's natural glow.

Glycolac: With a combination of Glycolic (25%) with Lactic (35%), it provides hydration and tone improvements of the Lactic, with the increased collagen stimulation of the glycolic. It is generally well tolerated because the lactic and glycolic work on different levels or the skin.

Salicylic: a great kertolytic which means it helps loosen the bonds between skin cells to promote exfoliating. It is the only hydroxy acid which is oil soluble which allows it to penetrate into clogged pores. It can be used more frequently than the other peels without must risk for irritation.

BHA+: Hands down the best peel for acne and oily skin. You should expect some visible flaking of the skin 2 days after using the peel. This will help with active acne blemishes as well as old acne marks, and a variety of other skin problems.

HQ+: This peel is best for pigmentation and acne scarring. Similar to our BHA+ peel, with added ingredients which to help to fade pigmentation differences and even skin tone. If you suffer from old acne marks, age spots, or melasma, this peel will be the most effective in helping you.

Two major players in the acne treatment arena are now fighting for top place. The first one is benzoyl peroxide. Developed by Revlon in the 1920's for the treatment of acne, this highly reactive and toxic chemical was introduced in various strengths. Most people can tolerate the 2.5% concentration. When your skin develops a tolerance, you can move up to higher concentrations as necessary. More recently, it was discovered that salicylic acid caused the skin to exfoliate more rapidly and also got rid of excess skin oils which had the side benefit of helping with acne breakouts.

Benzoyl peroxide has worked for people with moderate acne for many years. There are many creams available which are both affordable and effective. An example is Neutrogena's cream with 2.5% benzoyl peroxide concentration. If you look on the acne boards, there are many users who use this with moderate success. My skin has never tolerated using this medication at any concentration. My face would dry out almost instantly and get red all over like a sunburn. Many people are in the same boat as I am. At least part of this reason is due to the fact that bp is so reactive. If you spill any of it onto a shirt or other article of clothing, you'll see what I mean. BP is also used in dyeing hair and in teeth whitening products because of it's powerful bleaching action. Recently, there has been much press about the possibility of getting cancer from repeated use. As a result, I don't recommend you use it.

Salicylic acid is a mild exfoliant which has been shown to help with acne. For me, the effects were subtle, and my face improved overall after using it. People with severe acne will probably get minimal results and will have to use more powerful methods. I have also used products that use blue light to treat acne and they are the future of acne treatment in my opinion. There are also products which use heat applied to the pimple and I have tried them with success also. These options are discussed on our website in much more detail.

In conclusion, benzoyl peroxide works for many people, but may have long term negative health effects, so consult with your physician and do your homework. Salicylic acid is much gentler but also is overall less effective with some people. The new wave of heat and light utilizing devices is on the horizon. Take a look at the future on our website.
